The Sonoran Desert is an arid region covering 120,000 square miles in southwestern Arizona, southern California, and even parts of northern Mexico. Its landscape is hot and dry, but despite its lack of rainfall the terrain has a truly astonishing beauty. What rain does fall usually arrives in the winter, and it helps support both plant and wildlife. A major feature of the desert is its canyons.
