AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS

Augustus Saint-Gaudens One of America's more influential artists, the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848–1907) is the Irish-born American sculptor of the Beaux-Arts generation. His work has come to embody the ideals of the "American Renaissance." Raised in New York City, he traveled to Europe for further training and artistic study, and then returned to major critical success in the design of monuments commemorating heroes of the American Civil War, many of which still stand. These include works his Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on Boston Common as well as his grand equestrian monuments to Civil War generals John A. Logan, atop a tumulus in Chicago, and William Tecumseh Sherman, at the corner of New York's Central Park. Saint-Gaudens also maintained an interest in numismatics. He designed the twenty-dollar "double eagle" gold piece for the US Mint in 1905-07. It is considered to be the most beautiful American coin, although some prefer his $10 "Indian Head" gold eagle. (Both minted from 1907 until 1933.) In his later years, Saint-Gaudens helped found the "Cornish Colony," a menagerie of artists that included notable painters, sculptors, writers, and architects.

Saint-Gaudens cremated remains are interred beneath a temple on the grounds of his former home, Aspet, which is in Cornish, New Hampshire.
