Home of author Thomas Bailey Aldrich Strawbery Banke Museum |
Built around 1797, the Adrich House at Strawbery Banke is the former home of author Thomas Bailey Aldrich (1836–1907). It has been part of Strawbery Banke since 1979.
Born in Portsmouth, Aldrich was an American poet, novelist, traveler and editor best known for his childhood novel The Story of A Bad Boy (1870). This novel is said to have helped framed the idea of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, who was a good friend of Aldrich. Strawbery Banke affords a wonderful opportunity to experience and imagine American life as it has evolved during the past four centuries. Its restored houses, its featured exhibits, its historic landscapes and gardens, and its interpretive programs reveal much about our ancestors and how they forged the America that we live in today. The Crowley Collection has galleries that showcase the Strawbery Banke Museum:
The Crowley Collection offers other New England themes, including scenics, autumn foliage, county fairs, Red Sox Nation and historic sites such as Old Sturbridge Village and the Robert Frost Farm.
