Strawbery Banke Museum Portsmouth, New Hampshire |
|
Built around 1811, and fully furnished, the Goodwin Mansion at Strawbery Banke was moved across town from its original location on Islington Street. The mansion is the former home of Ichabod Goodwin and his wife Sarah Parker Rice Goodwin, who occupied it from 1832 until 1896. Born at nearby North Berwick (Maine), Goodwin (1796–1882) worked in a counting house, became master and part-owner of several ships, and eventually the owner of two railroads, two banks, and a textile factory. He also served as governor of New Hampshire from 1859 to 1861.
Strawbery Banke affords a wonderful opportunity to experience and imagine American life as it has evolved during the past four centuries. Its restored houses, its featured exhibits, its historic landscapes and gardens, and its interpretive programs reveal much about our ancestors and how they forged the America that we live in today. The Crowley Collection has galleries that showcase the Strawbery Banke Museum:
The Crowley Collection offers other New England themes, including scenics, autumn foliage, county fairs, Red Sox Nation and historic sites such as Old Sturbridge Village and the Robert Frost Farm.
