Located about 25 miles northeast of Boston, Rockport is at the tip of the Cape Ann peninsula. It is directly east of Gloucester and surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. Rockport has a longstanding reputation as an art colony, in large part because of its picturesque boulder-strewn ocean beaches, its quaint fishing shacks, and its harbor of colorful fishing boats. A red fishing shack on Bradley Wharf in Rockport, known as "Motif Number 1," is one of the more famous sites on Cape Ann. It has been the subject of many paintings as well as photographs, each artist striving to capture the subject and its amazing light in his or her unique style.
