With the Piscataqua River flowing into the sea at Portsmouth, the city has been populated with mariners and shipbuilders since the day Europeans first arrived in 1603. Established in 1800, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Kittery, Maine) is the oldest continuously-operated shipyard in the United States Navy. The shipyard ( built the nation's first warship, the frigate U.S.S. Raleigh (1776). For nearly a century, the facility has built and repaired submarines. Visitors to the city can take in the park that is home to the USS Albacore (AGSS-569). This unique research submarine pioneered the American version of the teardrop hull form (sometimes referred to as an "Albacore hull") of modern submarines.
The city is also well known for its
Strawbery Banke Museum, which makes Portsmouth a rival of such other historic sites as Williamsburg (Virginia) and
