PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE

Portsmouth is a city (pop. 20,784) in Rockingham County, New Hampshire that is both an historic seaport and popular summer tourist destination. The first known European to explore and write about the area was Martin Pring in 1603. The village was settled in 1630 as Piscataqua, then given the name Strawbery Banke because of wild strawberries growing beside the Piscataqua River, a tidal estuary with a swift current. Strategically located for trade between upstream industries and mercantile interests abroad, the port prospered. Fishing, lumber and shipbuilding were principal businesses of the region.

Today, Portsmouth is one of the "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It has evolved from a navy town into the quintessential seaport tourist destination. This is due largely to its wealth of historic colonial buildings, many of which are preserved in collection of the renowned Strawbery Banke Museum. Other buildings of great historic value are found amidst its now quaint downtown. The city is much appreciated for its summertime Market Square Day, mid-winter First Night celebration, and its many stages, including The Music Hall and the Pontine Theatre. As one might expect, the city is well respected for its wide array of exceptional dining establishments, some of which are located along the river. The Crowley Collection has a wide variety of images that capture the spirit and ambiance of historic Portsmouth.
