A brilliant and perceptive writer on the game of golf, Englishman Donald Steel (born 1937) became one the game's best course designers. Steel did so by designing sensibly challenging yet enjoyable layouts at a time when other more illustrious designers made beautiful but ridiculously difficult courses.
